Oak House is a stylish 15th Century holiday cottage for six just off the famous Mermaid Street, Rye, East Sussex

Oak House was built in 1578 only a few steps from the historic Mermaid Street in Traders Passage. As you would imagine the property has many charms and quirks with a 21st Century twist to ensure our guests have a memorable stay.

You enter the property into the hallway, space for hanging coats and leaving muddy boots. To the left, you have the kitchen and dining area. The kitchen is fully equipped with ample catering equipment and all the mod cons you would have at home, coffee machine, dishwasher, washing machine etc. The dining table comfortably seats 4 and has 2 additional seats for a full house. To the right of the hallway, you have the large, cosy lounge with two sofas and a comfy armchair. There is an inglenook fireplace with an electric flame effect wood stove to add to the ambience. Smart TV, board games, books and Wifi support all your entertaining needs. Off the lounge, you have the secret garden room with seating and it is eclectically decorated. A door leads to the very small outside space with a table and chairs, just enough space to enjoy a warm summers evening.

From the hallway, stairs lead up to the first floor bedrooms and family bathroom. There is one twin bedroom and one double bedroom with an antique bed frame and an opulent presentation. Both bedrooms share the modern family bathroom, with WC, washbasin, bath with separate shower hose and overhead shower head. The second set of stairs lead you to the master suite. A beautiful space at the top of the house with views over Rye’s rooftops. It has its own ensuite bathroom with WC, hand basin, bath with shower attachment. Due to the properties age there are exposed beams that will require you to ‘duck’ to avoid a sore head. Wherever you see a plastic duck, remember to dip.

The cottage is full of character and has been sympathetically furnished with comfort and style in mind, making it a great holiday home for friends or families wanting some quality time away in medieval Rye.

All-in-all excellent. House was great (and warm) and above all we very much support the local personal-based company dealings and experience. Good luck moving forward. We’ll be back! Only negative: Nothing major at all to think of. A small thing - hot water is scolding and noisy (mind of its own tap) in the kitchen and needs a small tweak.

What a beautiful cottage in Rye! Would highly recommend this place for a weekend away with friends. Perfect location, everything you need for a weekends stay is available in the house and the communication with those that manage it and the owner was fantastic

Location, attention to detail, atmosphere, comfort, beds, towels, kitchen, all fabulous. We had an amazing stay with 6 friends and have already recommended Oak house to others. This is such an historic and warm house and really added to our experience in Rye.

Fantastic house to stay in. A historic building with everything you need for a great stay

Brilliant location for a family break An absolutely charming historic house, perfectly located in the beautiful medieval old town. Six of us - children, parents and grandparents - stayed here, and the arrangement of the rooms couldn't have suited us better. Plenty of space in the house, which is nicely furnished and well equipped. Would definitely stay here again. You can't park at the house, but can unload very nearby and then park in one of the public car parks, which are not expensive. This is a minor inconvenience, and it looks as though this applies not just to this house but many of the houses in the old part of town.

Had weekend with sis and nephews who I rarely see. Everyone had a good time. Beds very comfortable

Family catch up after many years. Could not have picked a better place to reminisce. Full of character and beams. Just the place to feel at home in historic Rye.
